The Big Read Returns in October 2010!
By popular demand, The Big Read returns this fall to south-central Kansas with book discussions and special events and exhibits in celebration of Zora Neale Hurston's "Their Eyes Were Watching God." Community partners from across the region make this effort possible. Titles for young readers wishing to participate are also available.
"The Big Read - Wichita's 2010 selection 'Their Eyes Were Watching God' opens the door to greater understanding among our community," shared honorary chair Vicki Tiahrt at the July 8 news conference announcing the receipt of the grant. "While the African-American experience in contemporary Kansas is certainly different than that of Janie Mae Crawford's, this book may be used to explore subjects that we could never share before. We are very hopeful that October will be a time of great literature, enjoyable programs and presentations and new opportunities for diverse friendships."
The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services designed to revitalize the role of literature in American culture and bring the transformative power of literature into the lives of citizens. The Big Read brings together partners across the country to encourage citizens to read for pleasure and enlightenment.
